That done, I can not afford to switch to a different brand of filter holder. I invested in the expensive Lee sunset filters and Gallen Rowell ND filters for the Lee filter holder, which I use on all other Contax lenses. When I need to use the ND filter, I will be shooting landscape, therefore I would use a tripod anyway, allowing my hands to hold the ND filter. You can try but I ended up returning the Lee 95 mm wide angel filter holder as well.Īll I am doing now is like you are doing, screw in the PL or warming filter to the lense, put the camera on tripod, then handhold the ND filer in front of the lense.

I admit I did not try to clamp it onto the PL filer. I tried to mount it on my Contax 645 35 mm (95 mm filter size) lense. I exchanged for the Lee 95 mm wide angel filer holder, which is supposed to use a clamp to clamp onto the front of the lense of filter. I ordered a Lee 95 mm filter holder adapter and a Lee filter holder, and returned the 95 mm adapter immediately, because it is not wide angel capable. I went through this exercise one year ago. Therefore, if you are not using an ND grad, then align the filter holder along the horizontal axis, rather than perpendicular to limit being caught out by the vignetting factor. With the rectangular format, your lens' covering power will have an inherent (probably slight) fall off along the horizontal axis compared with the square format. Alternatively, you are looking at gelatin sheets and larger format stuff, however I find the X-Pro system works fine for a 6圆cm format using a 40mm lens. If you are unhappy with Cokin's higher grade X-Pros, then you might write to Hi-tech who will happily manufacture you filters to fit the X-Pro holders at a price of the Cokin filters + or circa 300%. It has to be asked why you filter your images so heavily. The technique which you describe in holding the filter in front of a polariser is probably fine, since the polariser will eradicate any reflections from non plano-parallel alignment of secondary filters. Or alternatively, mount the X-Pro filters without the polariser using the 95mm adaptor ring. If you were to find out what the front filter thread is (let's say 105mm), and acquire a 105mm adaptor for a Cokin X-Pro system in addition to a 95mm adaptor for the filter system then you would be able to use the polariser at stopped down apertures (beyond the point where vignetting is discernible - perhaps about f8 on your lens?) and then mount the huge X-Pros on top with the 105mm. It is unlikely that your Contax 95mm filter has a 95mm front thread (if it does then you are very unfortunate because this will only cause more severe vignetting by stacking filters).

One system is the Cokin X-Pro system, which offers 95mm coupling threads to your Polariser filter and uses filters of 170mm x 140mm or something. If you trawl through the forums you'll find several responses.
